Finnish Geospatial Research Institute of the Land Survey of Finland (NLS)
The National Land Survey of Finland (NLS) conducts various kinds of land surveying tasks like parcelling and reallocations of pieces of land, produces map data material and promotes the joint use thereof. NLS safeguards the land ownership and credit granting system by maintaining information about mortgages and registrations of title to property as well as other property information in its registers. Other central tasks of NSL are spatial data research and application as well as data and information system development.
The Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) has been merged with NLS on 1.1.2015. The Department of Navigation and Positioning at FGI conducts innovative research to discover novel navigation and positioning solutions, such as new localization algorithms and the adaptation of new positioning sensors. The department is currently engaged in research in the areas of satellite and radio navigation, GNSS receiver design, GNSS interference mitigation, ubiquitous positioning, maritime situational awareness, ice-aware navigation, integration of multiple sensors for positioning in both indoor and outdoor environments, location-based service, context awareness, mobile mapping systems, and positioning in intelligent transportation systems.
The department has coordinated projects funded by the EU, ESA (European Space Agency), Tekes (Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation), Academy of Finland, and MATINE (Scientific Advisory Board for Defence). The department hosts a monitoring station of the first European satellite navigation system EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service).
